IVL states on its website that it generally offers a 15% discount to senior citizens.

International Van Lines offers its services in all 50 states, as well as to 180 countries. IVL is both a moving carrier and broker. This means that if your move falls outside of IVL’s service areas for in-house service, the company outsources your move to a partnered company.

The company will provide you with a binding estimate—a fixed rate that will not change on moving day—after a virtual walkthrough of your home.

Moving APT can provide nationwide local, long-distance, and international moves through a network of more than 2,500 moving companies. The company provides full-service relocations and offers a variety of add-on options like vehicle shipping and storage to personalize your moving package.

Our Rating: Best for Vehicle Relocation

If your senior parents have an RV or boat they’d like to move or they have a car they no longer drive, Allied Van Lines is a great option to transport their vehicle. Allied is accustomed to moving a wide variety of vehicles, such as sedans, trucks, SUVs, RVs, motorcycles, boats, and more. For added convenience, the company also offers GPS tracking on your shipment.

To obtain a binding estimate, Allied must conduct an in-home or virtual survey with you.

In a phone call with an Allied Van Lines customer service representative, we were told that its senior discounts vary on a case-by-case basis. The discount will most likely range between 10% and 15% and may be lower or higher depending on the service you purchase. If something goes wrong, NAVL also provides direct, easy-to-reach communication through separate customer support lines for filing claims and a detailed claims process. The company also provides transparent pricing online with a quick quote process. Additionally, U-Pack helps tailor its moves to seniors through additional third-party support and online resources.

U-Pack does have a 150-mileage minimum, so your move will have to be a long-distance move to receive U-Pack’s services. The company also only allows three days to load and three days to unload, so be sure you have enlisted some extra help for your senior parents.

U-Pack helps with long-distance moves in all 50 states, as well as Puerto Rico. Your move needs to have an overall distance of 150 miles or more to use U-Pack’s services.

Factors To Consider for Senior Citizen Moves

Many challenges occur when a senior citizen has to uproot from a family home they have occupied for a lifetime, whether it is to downsize to a smaller home, move in with family, or adjust to life in a senior living community. Here are some important factors to keep in mind as you plan this difficult move:

Research Assisted-Living Communities

When it is time for your senior parent, relative, or friend to move, think about where they should go. Have a conversation with them about where they want to live: in a new home, with relatives, or in a senior living community. There are various factors to consider when deciding where a senior should live next, such as medical conditions, accessibility, social interaction, and distance to family and friends.

What Support Is Needed

Once you have determined where your senior parent is going, determine what kind of move should happen. If you have plenty of help from friends and family, want to save money, and want on-site storage options, you may want to consider a self-service mover like U-Pack for your parent’s move. If you want as much assistance and support as possible, then a full-service mover, such as International Van Lines or Allied, might be a better choice.

Downsize Where Possible

Moving is a great time to downsize unwanted or underused belongings. As you help pack and prepare your parent’s items, create two piles of items. You should dedicate one pile for items going to donation centers and the other pile for items going to the dump. A couple of days before moving day, take these piles to their designated locations.

Be Patient

Most importantly, keep in mind that moving for a senior citizen can be even more stressful and difficult than typical moves. It will take time for them to adjust to their new surroundings and to properly settle in. Be patient during this time, and set aside time in your schedule to visit them, spend time with them, and check to see how they are doing.
